Colours of Kye Bay

One of the great sandy beaches in the Comox Valley area is Kye Bay.  Sandy beaches usually support eelgrass (Zostera marina), the favourite food of Brant Geese. On a quest for the geese, what I found instead was a kaleidoscope of colours on the beach.

Colourful Kye Bay Beach

The tide was at the low for the morning, just enought to reveal some of the sand bars with a full buffet of herring roe spread among the exposed cobbles and seaweeds. Gulls and Mallards were the main birds feasting on the roe.

Seaweeds can be classified into three groups: green (Chorophyta), red (Rhodophyta), and brown (Phaeophyta). With mounds of caramel-coloured roe and the blue tidepools & sky there was a full spectrum of colour.

Sea Lettuce & Herring Roe

Bright green Sea Lettuce (Ulva sp.) is edible and rich in nutrients.

Red Eyelet Silk

Red Eyelet Silk (Sparlingia pertussa) with naturally occurring holes or eyelets is one of the beautiful red seaweeds .

Sugar Kelp & Turkish Towel

Two of the beautifully textured seaweeds are Turkish Towel (Chondracanthus sp.) with tiny bumps (papillae), classed as a red seaweed, while Sugar Kelp (Saccarina sp.) with its puckers (bullations) is a brown seaweed.

Seaweed Salad

The whole array looked delicious enough to eat but I was satisfied with just a visual feast.
